A dear friend of our family, John Sharples, was working at Lato Guitars in Toronto, and this guitar came into the shop in pieces. So, I didn’t really have the traditional “first guitar.” This guitar came into the world as an early ’70s Fender somewhere around Toronto. My dad has been a working musician all my life, so there were always great guitars kicking around to play. I put so much time into decorating it as a 13-year-old kid! Joey Landreth (The Bros. When I pulled it out of the box, it was so brand new, but so old. It was a really cool, full-circle thing: It made me feel like I was 12 again. It’s crazy! When I played it for the first time, it was like the feeling of literally when I played that guitar for the first time when I was a kid. It was all dirty and fucked up and he replaced the pots and put that neck on it and it sounds so great and I love playing it so much. I got in touch with Chris at the Fender Custom Shop and I told him we were playing Colbert and sent him the guitar. Guild classical guitar mark 2 gitbox plus#I really love Telecaster Deluxe necks from the ’70s-I’ve got really bad carpal tunnel and l just like really thin necks, plus I love the huge headstock on those, too. But then my parents moved about a year ago, and when they were cleaning out a closet they found that guitar and they were like, “Oh my god, here’s your guitar! Do you want it?” And I’m like, “Yeah, of course I want it.” So, I got it and played it for a little while, and I liked it but I just didn’t like the neck much. I kind of forgot about it-I thought it was gone. Guild classical guitar mark 2 gitbox how to#Eventually, I gave it to my brother because he wanted to learn how to play guitar, but then he never learned, so it just sat in the closet. It was black, but I found these stickers that were sparkly apples and I put ’em all over the guitar. I got it when I was 12 or 13 and played it all through high school. And still, the value of this $200 guitar, it was so funny. I had to work in his business office all summer long, ripping huge boxes of office paper forms to pay him back for the guitar. It was around 1992 when my uncle helped me buy this Squier II Strat. Anyway, good things came from that Stella. And that confidence allowed me to progress very quickly when I finally started taking lessons. But I’ve come to appreciate that the time spent with just the low-E string allowed me to become really confident with that string. I’ve sometimes felt that those years were “wasted” due to my lack of knowledge and how limited my playing was. During those two years, I didn’t really know how to tune the guitar, so I mostly played the low-E string. I played my Stella acoustic for two years before I saved up enough money to buy an electric guitar. I may have installed a pickup in it at one time as well. Finally, I removed the mirrors and sanded the finish until the natural wood showed. Then I removed those and decorated the front with small square plastic mirrors that were left over from a do-it-yourself mirror ball kit. First, I covered it in stickers from Wacky Packages. It came with nylon strings, but I eventually changed them to electric strings because they were more bendable! The guitar suffered many experiments to its finish. The finish was red to black burst and it had a white pickguard. My mom’s friend gave it to me when I was around 5 years old. My first guitar was a 3/4-sized Stella nylon-string acoustic.

Three types of collectables exist within each world: coins, puzzle pieces, and artifacts. If Astro Bot falls or gets defeated, the level will restart. There are also enemy robots that Astro Bot can defeat and also earn coins. In the worlds, there are cable wires that Astro Bot can pull to collect projectiles, coins, and artifacts. The worlds also contain large numbers of other robots performing various activities, including acting out scenes from various current and former PlayStation-exclusive game franchises, such as God of War and Resident Evil. Another example is the ball suit in which the player must swipe the touchpad to guide the ball. For example, one world features a frog suit with a spring at the bottom in which the controller must be tilted laterally to guide the frog and the trigger pressed down to compress the spring, which offers resistance similar to how a real spring would using the adaptive trigger system. Two of these levels involve regular platforming whereas the other two involve a special power-up suit which makes use of the DualSense controller's capabilities. Įach of the four worlds are split up into four levels that are interconnected with each other. The plaza also houses two other areas: Network Speed Run, in which players can compete in unlockable time trials for the fastest time which can be shared to online leaderboards, and PlayStation Labo, which houses all of the collectables a player has collected. The game starts in a hub world called CPU Plaza which is modeled after the inside of the PlayStation 5 console and provides access to four worlds which are each themed after a component of the console, and the artifacts are themed after the corresponding console: GPU Jungle ( PlayStation 4), Cooling Springs ( PlayStation 3), SSD Speedway ( PlayStation 2), and Memory Meadow ( PlayStation). The haptic feedback of the controller is used to provide realistic tactile vibrations from actions, such as walking on different types of material, like sand, walking through rainfall, and walking against the wind. Like the previous game, he is able to jump, hover, punch enemies and objects, as well as use a spin attack by charging his punch. There is even a simple, but patented, bent-wire device for storing line. An occasional spool is hollowed out at one end so the bob can be stored in it for protection. There are homemade and manufactured examples and finely-crafted examples in exotic woods, brass or ivory. (I) Off-bob line storage: Spools or bobbins are commonly used to store line some have handle-spindles to facilitate winding and unwinding. This third option includes some of the most complex mechanisms among all hand tools. There are three options with multitudes of variations: (1) store the line on a device off the plumb bob, (2) store the line on the outside of the bob and (3) store the line on a reel inside the bob. "What should we do with the string?" is a question answered in three issues of The Plumb Line. I've wondered whether the more exotic brass or ivory plumb bobs that collectors prize may not have had their origins in Freemasonry, either as symbols of office or as gifts for service but, an expert in Freemasonry assures me this is not the case, at least in England or America. And, the plumb bob is the symbol of a past master. Masonic Trestle Boards of the 18th century depicted both the plumb board and the plumb level. As shown on page 45 of Jay Gaynor and Nancy Hagedorn's exhibition book (same name), it's decorated with symbolic tools including three plumb bobs which symbolize uprightness. In the current Williamsbwg exhibition, Tools: Working Wood in Eighteenth-Century America, there is a Master's Chair from a Virginia Masonic Lodge that dates to the late 1760s. Stone masons of the guilds in Europe relied on plumbs and plumb levels in their work, and the importance of these and other tools has carried over symbolically into Freemasonry. Many of the finest brass plumb bobs are from England. Note the amount of decoration on all of these bobs. Figure 2 shows a whale bone bob to the left of three ivory ones. Figure 1 shows Bruce with some of the bobs that occupy a wall in his home. There are little bobs for clockmaking, large bobs for shipbuilding, bobs for special purposes, and bobs with exotic shapes and extraordinary hand-done decoration and filigree. Collectors have bobs of ivory, bone, pottery and wood. Several catalogs had the same selection suggesting a common manufacturer.īut not all plumb bobs of this period were so mundane. Steel points were offered with some bobs and japanning was offered with some iron bobs. Most bobs offered in this general market were heart shaped, with an occasional turnip shape, and were made of brass, lead or iron. Symmetrical construction to assure the plumb bob would hang on its central axis, affixing the line on the central axis with the point, and the point itself were the improvements that brought us to the bobs we find in American hardware catalogs of the 1800s (Shannon, Walter's, Russell & Erwin, Hammacher Schlemmer etc.). The plumb bob evolved to meet requirements for accuracy in such functions as erecting tall buildings, installing machinery, mining and surveying. Illustrations of early plumb bobs appear in the December 1992 issue of The Plumb Line. An early improvement was the drilling of a hole to attach the line. Such crude bobs, with no thought yet of a point at the bottom, offered sufficient accuracy for their purpose. These very early bobs were simply shaped stones, sometimes with grooves around them to keep the line from slipping off. So I want to thank Bruce for sharing his knowledge and providing the photos for this article.Įgyptians certainly used plumb devices to build the pyramids, and perhaps others used them earlier. International Details - Transformers Remains Hair-raising I was a little worried that a special edition for the latter might be around the corner, but that wasn't enough to prevent me from naming it as the DVD Pick of the Week. It's been rare to find one first-run release worth picking up in any given week, but this week we have two that are contenders for DVD Pick of the Week: 300 - 2-Disc Special Edition and Hot Fuzz - Buy from Amazon. We finally got some wide releases worth picking up this week, which have been in tight supply most of the summer. Pathfinder's sales were stronger than its rentals as it moved 562,000 units for a total of $10.10 million in sales, which was more than it earned theatrically. The film made more than that in just one week on the home market in combined rentals and sales, so everyone involved must be very, very happy indeed. Second place went to Hot Fuzz with a very respectable 676,000 units you must remember, this is a film that only cost 8 million Pounds to make, roughly, which is about $17 million American. Its opening week sales of $115 million was double the rest of the top 30. The battle for first place wasn't even close, though, asģ00 made a dominant debut, selling 5.10 million units, which was 2 million more than the rest of the top 30 combined. You don’t see Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood or Kenny Chesney spending their accumulated capital on surprising artistic adventures. But let’s look at mainstream country, perhaps the most risk-adverse segment of today’s popular music. In today’s music world, it’s easy to identify those who spend their celebrity capital boldly (Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar) and those who don’t (Jay Z, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars). They spent their celebrity capital on the ornate art-rock of Sergeant Pepper and the stripped-down country-folk of John Wesley Harding. In the late 1960s, the Beatles and Bob Dylan were two of the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. It cost the Democratic Party control of Congress, but it was the greatest improvement in American public health since Medicare. Barack Obama spent his capital on passing Obamacare. It cost the Democratic Party the South for two generations, but it was the greatest expansion of democracy in the U.S. If you simply reinvest it to create even more capital, what’s the point, if you never put it to use? Why did you do all that hard work getting elected, getting famous or getting rich if you’re not going to spend your capital on something you want, something that might be remembered?Īfter getting elected as president in a landslide, Lyndon Johnson spent his political capital on Civil Rights bills and Medicare. If it just sits under your mattress or in a savings account, it’s dead wealth, taken out of circulation and eaten up by inflation. If you have sold enough tickets and/or products, won enough awards and media coverage, companies and audiences are more likely to support your dodgier projects, no matter how unlikely they seem.īut here’s the thing about capital-political, celebrity or financial-it’s only valuable if you spend it. “Celebrity capital” describes the analogous dynamic in arts and entertainment. If you were popular enough to win the last election and to be favored for the next, politicians and voters are more likely to support your riskier ventures against fierce opposition, because they want to stay on your good side. “Political capital” is a term that political scientists use to describe the blend of power and popularity that enables certain figures to get things done. These records were such welcome surprises that it prompts one to ask why more famous musicians don’t spend their “celebrity capital” this way.
